Concrete sealers are a chemical used to provide a barrier on top of concrete to ensure the material’s integrity. Driveways, sidewalks, and patios are just a few examples of concrete projects that require sealing for protection. For the most part, concrete sealers are water-based and are not considered harmful or dangerous. When applying any type of chemical, it is important to learn how to use it and how to dispose of any leftover chemicals. Read on to see what you must do in order to seal your concrete correctly in a safe manner.

Sealant Types

Water-based sealers are user and environmentally friendly. They do not contain any type of solvents that can be harmful. They also have zero or love Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC). The sealers are not combustible and flammable, which makes one feel more comfortable when applying the product. This is a safer alternative for sealing concrete projects.

On the other hand, a solvent-based sealer is one that is considered hazardous. This type will contain Volatile Organic Compounds but are accepted within certain regulatory standards. This type can be combustible or flammable. The sealer type is still safe to use, but more caution is needed when applying the product. Users must follow the directions correctly in order to avoid any issues.

A solvent-based sealer needs to be kept away from open flame, heat or sparks. Containers should be closed at all times and protected while stored. With this type, the sealer needs to be applied in an area with adequate ventilation. Vapor buildup can create an explosion, which can be dangerous. Doors and windows should be open when applying a sealer inside the home or enclosed areas to provide ventilation.

It is also important to note that solvent vapors can be irritating to the respiratory system. Skin contact can also cause irritation. Eye protection should be worn when using this product as well as gloves.

Reviewing the Product

Whenever you apply a chemical during a project, the product must be reviewed. When choosing your sealant, it is recommended to use a water-based product for a safer application process. However, if you need to use a solvent-based you can, but the directions must be followed specifically.

Whichever type of sealant you choose to use, be sure to understand the danger factor, if it exists, and apply the sealant accordingly. When you follow the directions, the concrete will be sealed properly, and the integrity of the material will remain intact.

Sealing should be done every few years as needed so that your concrete areas are not subject to cracking, buckling or breakage in the future.

Consulting a Professional

If you are unsure about the sealing process or feel uncomfortable with the application, you can easily hire a concrete company to complete the process for you. With the help of a concrete professional, your concrete driveway, sidewalk or patio installation will be sealed correctly, helping you to have a solid concrete space for years to come.
