Moving into a new place is a big deal, and it can be an expensive process. So, when you’re considering renting or buying a home, you want to make sure that the home is in good shape and has no major problems. Especially when you’re moving into a new house or apartment, there are some things to look out for and ask about that may not be initially obvious or apparent. In the article below, we’ve listed three of them to keep in mind.

If There Are Things That Need Repair

Don’t settle for anything that isn’t up to par, even if it’s not in perfect shape or has minor flaws, because those are what will ultimately make or break your search. First off, there’s a simple visual inspection to look for cracks and tears in the concrete or metal parts of the home’s structure. You can also look for discoloration on metal parts or staining on walls or ceilings. Cracks and holes or missing pieces can be indicative of structural problems with the home. You can also look for visible signs of water damage by checking foundation walls and floors for evidence of leakage around doors and windows, which would have occurred during any stormy weather. You should also check out all appliances in the house, especially those that are exposed to water damage — appliances like dishwashers and washing machines. Any signs of rust might indicate leaks during storms.

Whether Concrete Pieces Been Repaired

If you see any cracks in the concrete floor or walls of your house then it’s important to know if those have been repaired or just covered up with paint. It’s easy enough for someone to hide cracks by painting over them and saying that they were fixed but if they weren’t actually fixed then those cracks will just continue growing until they cause more damage throughout your home. You don’t want to move into a place and find out that the foundation is falling apart beneath your feet. One way you can check is by looking at the concrete pieces around the foundation and seeing if they’ve been repaired. If they haven’t been, that’s a bad sign, but if they have been, that could be an indication that there’s something wrong with the foundation.

Find out Whether the Roof and Plumbing are In Good Condition

A leaking roof may have problems with the flashing or shingles. When you look at the underlayment of the roof it should be smooth and tight. If there are gaps or loose spots, it could mean a problem with mold or rot. When it comes to plumbing, it should be easy to see exposed pipes under sinks and water heaters, but if there are any signs of corrosion or leaks, it would be best to have a plumber look at them. Make sure all outlets are grounded three-prong outlets — this will save you from replacing them when you move in.
