A fire pit is a great addition to any home. Available in all shapes and sizes, a fire pit can easily provide a nice relaxing area for the exterior of your property. When installing a fire pit, you want to place it near the home so that it can be enjoyed, but far enough away to ensure the fire does not affect your dwelling. Perhaps you have been considering adding a new fire pit to your concrete patio, but fear it may be damaged due to the heat. Learning more about concrete and fire pit interaction will help you to decide if this type of installation will work for your home.

Permanent Versus Removable Fire Pit

The first thing to consider is the type of fire pit you will be installing. Do you have a removable one, a fire pit that is metal and sits off the ground? If so, you can use this fire pit anywhere. It can be placed on your concrete patio with ease, without any potential damage caused. However, you do want to place the fire pit away from the home to avoid any potential fire damage.

If you are considering a permanent installation, one created from stones or pavers, more consideration is needed for the installation. Placing a permanent fire pit on concrete is safe. It provides an easy way to remove ash from the fire after the flames have died down. However, the concrete may start to expand or crack because of the heat.

Because of this damage potential, it is important to build your fire pit in an area that you do not mind being damaged. The repairs may be costly, so you need to be okay with the damage or ready to pay up when the time comes, and the repair can no longer be avoided.

On the positive side, using a fire pit on a concrete slab does mean that you do not have to worry about the concrete catching fire. When fire pits are placed in the yard near landscaping, there is a risk of a brush or grass fire.

Weighing the Pros and Cons

When installing your fire pit, weigh the pros and cons. Do you have an existing concrete slab you wish to use for the installation? Do you mind if it is damaged over time? Would the repairs be affordable or a must once heat damages the concrete?

By weighing your options, you can choose to install a removable or permanent fire pit fixture. If you have a brand-new concrete slab installation, you may be better off going with a fire pit that is raised off the ground. A prefabricated fire pit is easy to find at local department stores and comes in a variety of styles.

Being able to remove the fire pit allows you to protect your concrete and clean up the outdoor space when the fire pit is not in use.

Consider your options and what you hope to enjoy with your fire pit installation. Make your decision based on what will work best for you and your family.
